Toronto Community Housing Lowers Resident's Ceiling Below City Standards
Tenant says ceiling was lowered to accommodate city-mandated sprinkler system
City building code requires ceilings to be at least 7 feet high
A Toronto Community Housing (TCH) tenant says their ceiling was lowered to accommodate a city-mandated sprinkler system, leaving them with less than the minimum required headroom.
The city's building code requires ceilings to be at least 7 feet high, but the tenant's ceiling is now just over 6 feet tall. The tenant, who lives in a TCH building in the city's east end, said the lowered ceiling is causing them health problems.
"I'm constantly hitting my head on the ceiling," the tenant said. "I'm also having trouble breathing because the air is so close to my face."
TCH said in a statement that it is aware of the tenant's concerns and is working to resolve the issue.
"We are committed to providing safe and affordable housing to our tenants," the statement said.
