Colombia Uruguay Mundial 2014

Colombia triumph over Uruguay, set up Brazil quarter-final

Rodriguez double fires Los Cafeteros into last eight

Colombia booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Uruguay on Saturday night.

Rodriguez shines

James Rodriguez was the star of the show for Colombia, scoring both goals in the second half. The first came in the 50th minute, when he curled a free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards. The second came in the 80th minute, when he latched onto a through ball from Juan Cuadrado and finished coolly past Fernando Muslera.

The victory was Colombia's third in a row at this World Cup, and they will now face Brazil in the quarter-finals on Friday, July 4.

Uruguay disappointed

Uruguay were disappointed to lose, but they can be proud of their performance in Brazil. They reached the last 16 for the first time since 2010, and they pushed Colombia all the way in this game.

Luis Suarez, who had scored four goals in the group stage, was quiet for Uruguay on Saturday night. He had few chances to score, and he was well marshalled by the Colombian defence.

Conclusion

Colombia are now one of the favourites to win the World Cup. They have a talented squad, and they are playing with confidence. Brazil will be a tough test, but Colombia will be confident of causing an upset.
