The Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard has withdrawn from Team USA ahead of the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, the team announced Wednesday. The move comes as Leonard continues to deal with the effects of a knee injury that has limited him in recent months.
"After consulting with our medical team, we have decided that it is in Kawhi's best interest to withdraw from Team USA at this time," Clippers President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank said in a statement.
Leonard, 29, has been dealing with a right knee issue since the Clippers' playoff run last season. He underwent surgery in July to repair a partially torn ACL, and his recovery has been closely monitored by the team.
Leonard played in just eight games during the 2020-21 season, and his status for the upcoming season remains uncertain. His withdrawal from Team USA is a clear indication that he is still not fully recovered from his injury.
